Beijing Olympics opening ceremony !!!

China pulls wraps off Olympics' opening ceremony

More than 20,000 performers will spend more than three hours on Friday evening bringing 5,000 years of Chinese history to the world as the Games of the 29th Olympiad begin at the Beijing National Stadium.

And after seven years of preparation and months of controversy and protests, the celebration couldn't come soon enough for China's officials.

Here in Canada, the show will begin at 7 a.m. ET on Friday, hosted by CBC Television's Ron McLean and chief correspondent Peter Mansbridge. There will also be a pre-ceremony show at 5:45 a.m. ET on CBCSports.ca.

As always, details of the opening ceremony have been kept as secret as possible — a South Korean TV show did get a sneak peek last week, causing yet another controversy — but officials have said there will be 29,000 fireworks set off in numerous sites around the city as part of the celebration.

We also know who will be carrying the Chinese flag into the ceremonies — NBA star Yao Ming. But who will have the honour of lighting the cauldron at the end remains unknown.

The only thing officials have said is that the person will be renowned for their sporting achievement and "social influence."

Film director Zhang Yimou (House of Flying Daggers ) has overseen the ceremony which, coupled with the closing celebration, has reportedly run up a tab of more than $100 million US.

An estimated four billion people around the world are expected to watch the ceremony live or on tape.

Celebrations culminate with the parade of athletes from all nations — Canada's flag will be carried by kayaker Adam van Koeverden — the arrival of the Olympic flag, its raising to the accompaniment of the Olympic anthem, and the torch lighting.

Paris Hilton Political Ad

Paris Hilton releases ad attacking John McCain

Not to be outdone by John McCain, Paris Hilton has released an attack ad of her own. But this one attacks John McCain.

Paris Hilton and her mother Kathy were upset about the unauthorized use of Paris's image in the McCain ad, even though the Hiltons donated $4600 to McCain's campaign. "It is a complete waste of the country's time and attention at the very moment when millions of people are losing their homes and their jobs," Kathy Hilton told the media.

The new video spoof opens with images of the crowd at Barack Obama's speech last month in Berlin. It's the same image that John McCain used to mock Obama in his "Celeb" ad last week that depicted Hilton.

As the narrator then describes John McCain, the ad shows old people, including The Golden Girls, Larry King, and a character from Tales from the Crypt.

"He's the oldest celebrity in the world," says the narrator. "Like, super old. Old enough to remember when dancing was a sin and beer was served in a bucket. But is he ready to lead?"

Paris Hilton is then shown lying on a pool chair in a bikini. "Hey, America, I'm Paris Hilton and I'm a celebrity, too," she says, looking to the camera. "Only, I'm not from the olden days and I'm not promising change like that other guy. I'm just hot."

Paris Hilton then describes McCain as "that wrinkly white-haired guy" who she says "used me in his campaign ad, which I guess means I'm running for president." She then takes the bait and launches into her own campaign. "So thanks for the endorsement, white haired dude."

As for her energy policy: "Just as soon as I finish reading this article on where I can fly to to get the best tan," she says to the camera, then looks up after a few seconds of reading Conde Nast Travel magazine.

After settling on Maui, she launches into her energy policy, which is very unlike Paris Hilton.

"Barack wants to focus on new technologies to cut foreign oil dependency. And McCain wants offshore drilling. Well, why don't we do a hybrid of both candidates' ideas? We can do limited offshore drilling with strict environmental oversight while creating tax incentives to get Detroit making hybrid and electric cars. That way, the offshore drilling carries us until the new technologies kick in, which will then create new jobs and energy independence. Energy crisis solved! I'll see you at the debates, bitches."

After resolving the energy crisis, she then promises "to go pick out a vice president" and suggests pop star Rihanna as a possibility.

And of course, she ends with the obligatory campaign tagline: "I'm Paris Hilton and I approve this message because I think it's totally hot," she says.

Or as she says in another part of the ad, "I'm, like, totally ready to lead."

National Underwear Day ???

Girlawhirl knows the first step to building a pulled together look starts with the right undergarments. Really and truly, she considers underwear the unsung hero of fashion. Even the chicest outfit can go awry with the wrong garments underneath. So she too will spend a few minutes today in observance of National Underwear Day

For the sixth year in a row, underwear clad models will invade New York City, but this time Times Square isn't getting the special treatment it's received in the past. Instead the runway and star-studded event is moving indoors, but the giveaways are still going strong. National Underwear Day founders FreshPair.com will randomly give lucky passersby throughout the city thousands of pairs of free underwear sponsored by 2(x)ist, Unico, Wigwam and Diesel.

New York Super Pals just might have to take the long way to get where they're going in hopes of stumbling upon a free fresh pair.

Happy National Underwear Day!!!

National Underwear Day was founded, and had its inaugural celebration in August 2003. Since that time, it has become a grand scale annual event featuring underwear runway shows at the center of Times Square in New York City, underwear changing tents where the public comes to receive their own complimentary fresh pair, and live appearances by underwear models on the morning news shows. Every year, we celebrate yet another full force tribute to what everyone wears underneath.

This year’s National Underwear Day will take place on Tuesday, August 5th. In commemoration of the 6th anniversary of National Underwear Day, five hundred VIPs, celebrities and international tastemakers will join Freshpair indoors at the glamorous venue Espace in New York to celebrate! Actress and fashion maven Lydia Hearst will be the host of the 6th Annual National Underwear Day. Model Tyson Beckford will also be making a special appearance.

Texas Cheerleaders Scandal - Fab Five Texas Cheerleaders

The group of cheerleaders at McKinney North High School was known as the "Fab Five." The girls were "uber cool," according to attorney Harry Jones, who was hired by the school district to launch an investigation.

They were "telling teachers to shut up, using a cell phone in class even after being told not to, cheating on tests, skipping school," Jones said.
The pictures turned up on MySpace.com in September.

The girls were drinking in some of them, NBC News' Michelle Kosinski reported. In another picture, girls posed in the cheerleading uniforms in a condom shop.
According to Jones' report, the girls were "smiling and holding candles shaped like male genitalia."

At the time, the girls were suspended, but never kicked off the cheerleading squad.
Jones said they felt they could intimidate and threaten anyone at the school in part because the principal, Linda Theret, was the mother of the squad's co-captain.

"Teachers were scared of them," Jones said. "I talked to a ... football coach who was teaching student council, and he was obviously scared of them. He had taught inner-city school kids in San Francisco and he said gang members were nothing compared to these girls."

In the wake of the investigation, Theret agreed to resign and the Fab Five are now off the cheerleading team.

Theret's attorney and some of the cheerleaders have been quoted as saying Jones' portrayal of them is unfair and overly harsh.

But Jones' 70-page report blames Theret for protecting the girls, who also had support from their own parents.

"Kids will be kids, but adults have to be adults," Jones said.

The 2008 Solar Eclipse

The Moon will cover the Sun's face in the daytime, but only for a fortunate few.- Michael E. Bakich

Total Solar Eclipse The August 1, 2008, total solar eclipse begins in Canada, moves through Greenland and Russia, and ends in China. The diamond ring marks the start and end of the total phase of a solar eclipse. It occurs as the Moon covers the last vestige of the Sun’s disk. Adam Clayson

On Friday, August 1, 2008, a celestial lineup will turn daytime into dusk during the 21st century's sixth total solar eclipse. As the Moon slowly covers the Sun's face — then hides it for as long as 2.5 minutes — where you are will determine how much of this event you'll see.

This total eclipse is visible from within a narrow corridor that traverses half the Earth. The path of the Moon's umbral shadow — the dark, inner part where the eclipse is total — begins in Canada and extends across northern Greenland, the Arctic, central Russia, Mongolia, and China. Inhabitants of those regions outside the central eclipse path will see a partial eclipse if they fall under the much broader path of the Moon's penumbral shadow — the outer, lighter part. The partial eclipse zone includes northeastern North America and most of Europe and Asia. Unfortunately, none of the United States falls under any part of the Moon's shadow.

What makes an eclipse?

A total solar eclipse occurs when the Sun, the Moon, and Earth align, with the Moon in the middle. In a rough sense, this happens every 29.5 days, each time there's a New Moon. The Moon's orbit tilts about 5° to Earth's orbit, so most of the time the Moon lies above or below the center line of the three bodies. Only when it lies on that line does totality occur, and then only for a narrow path where the inner (darkest) part of the Moon's shadow touches Earth.

Regions that fall under the outer portion of the Moon's shadow experience a partial eclipse. The closer a location is to the center line, the deeper (percentage-wise) the eclipse.

The August 1 total solar eclipse begins in Canada, moves through Greenland and Russia, and ends in China. Fred Espenak, NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center

August's eclipse arcs across more than 6,200 miles (10,000 km) of Earth's surface. Unfortunately, most of this path either lies in regions difficult to reach or in areas likely to be cloudy. Still, many amateur astronomers and eclipse lovers will travel thousands of miles to see this event. Two locations offer good accessibility — and a better than 50 percent chance of clear skies.

The first location, Novosibirsk, Russia, marks the destination of many tour groups. The second destination is Hami, China. The eclipse's center line (where the event's length is greatest) passes a bit west of Novosibirsk, directly over its airport near the town of Ob, which has a population of some 25,000.

Novosibirsk sits in Siberia in central Russia, but forecasters expect no frigid conditions August 1. Both satellite data and surface observations show a 54-percent likelihood of sunshine there. This city has another advantage in terms of getting there: With a population of 2.7 million, it ranks as Russia's third-largest metropolis.

Another good spot for eclipse watchers will be northern China, just past the Altai Mountains on the Russia-China border. Rainfall is uncommon because the mountains block much of the weather patterns moving through this region and because the eclipse path passes between the Taklimakan and Gobi deserts.

Eclipse tour leader Jackie Beucher from Kansas City says: "There's nothing like a total eclipse. No experience you'll ever have compares to standing under the Moon's shadow in the daytime, seeing planets and bright stars, not to mention the Sun's corona."

Harry Potter 6 - New Photos and Movie Trailer ???

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince photo

USA Today unveiled two new shots from the upcoming “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” First photo of a young Tom Riddle (Frank Dillane) and Dumbledore’s (Michael Gambon) firestorm that he uses in the caves. These two shots will also appear in the full-length trailer that’s due to be released today (Tuesday) and in theaters on Friday before “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince photo

Director David Yates said that editing is complete and the studio will soon be shown the finished product four months in advance of its theatrical debut. The biggest reveal is the young Tom Riddle, played by Hero Fiennes-Tiffin, who grows up to become Lord Voldemort.

Hero is Ralph Fiennes‘ (who plays Voldemort) nephew in real life, however Yates explained that his relationship to Ralph “wasn’t the primary reason for choosing him.” Instead, “I went for Hero because of this wonderful haunted quality that seemed to bring Tom Riddle alive on-screen for us.” This last bit should give you a chill down your spine. “Even at a very young age, Tom Riddle shows tendencies toward cruelty and maliciousness,” Yates says. “And it’s a very unsettling thing to see.”

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” is again directed by David Yates, of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix previously, and written by Steve Kloves, who also wrote “Sorcerer’s Stone”, “Chamber of Secrets”, “Prisoner of Azkaban”, and “Goblet of Fire” but not “Order of the Phoenix.” This is the sixth book in J.K. Rowling’s immensely popular series.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” arrives in theaters on November 21st this Thanksgiving.
